Affiliate marketing works wonders for many people who end up earning heaps of money. On the other hand, many affiliates find it difficult to survive and sustain in the competition. Successful affiliates do not always do different things but they do basic things differently. There are a few mistakes that an affiliate must be very careful about and cannot afford to commit. 1. All advertisement and no content: The question that needs to be answered is – “Why do people visit websites?” The answer is simple, “to read the information that they are looking for”. Information certainly does not lay in the ad banners of your website. Many affiliates flood their website with too many banner ads. There is not enough content for the visitor to read as a result of which, most of the visitors leave the website uninterested. Only if your website offers good content, can you expect visitors to stay long and eventually click on one of those ad links.
   
2. They wait for things to happen: As an affiliate, you can not afford to be passive. You need to be proactive. You may have a well designed website that provides loads of information. You would however need to promote your website. You would need to talk about it through social networking website and educate people about your website. Some of the ways to do so are article writing, blogging, chatting and so on.
   
3. Too much of link building can be lethal: Link building is a very important aspect of affiliate marketing. Some affiliates tend to ignore link building while others do it excessively. The problem with zero link-building efforts is that your website traffic flow will fall down drastically. Search engines will rank your website low and no one will know about your website. Rampant and careless link building can result in back links with spam sites or black listed websites. Search engine robots may also down rank your website if they sense unethical link building. So, remember, the ‘quality but not the quantity of backlinks matters.
   
4. No excessive usage of keywords: Keywords are important for any website. Search engines list your website only on the basis of the keywords that your website uses. Many affiliates make no use of keywords at all or they do not use relevant keywords that suit your niche. On the other hand, some affiliates tend to use their keywords excessively. Search engine robots may treat keyword stuffed content as spam content. Therefore, you should stay away from keyword bombardment. The best way is to maintain a healthy keyword density of 1 to 2 percent. Using keywords in the titles, headings, subheadings, first sentence of the paragraph and in the last sentence of the concluding paragraph is a good practice.
   
5. Complicated user interfaces: Many affiliates over try with the design of their websites and end up with complicated user interfaces. The user interface of your website needs to be very simple. You may wish to add a few images and some great animations to it but at the end of the day, it must be easy to use and navigate through. Simplicity is the key.
